The fascination of cultural and social differences

26th August 2014

Always a joy to view international fieldwork and see cultural differences emerge.  The Dutch continue to fascinate me with their pragmatic and modest outlook…hesitant at projecting success, their courage, honesty and ability to hold opinion-fuelled debates and their punctuality of arriving for discussion groups!

In our recent research it was captivating to explore the differences between the attitudes of Dutch and English women on personal care regimes.  The down-to-earth & refreshing  approach of the Dutch is evident in this context too. They are reluctant to show off their beauty and reveal how much time they spend on their regimes, to the point of feeling a bit egocentric if they spend too much time on their own physical appearance.    Instead, they involve themselves in many forms of relaxation and meditation in order to feel good from the inside.  How different UK women are! They are proud to spend time on looking after themselves and take delight in presenting their freshly manicured nails and discussing their intricate skincare and haircare regimes!

In both cultures, caring for oneself, regardless of the manifestation, is the foundation of many aspects of life. Self-care and the resulting self-confidence, is central to being able to care for loved ones and is vital in ensuring the ability to provide love and affection; in turn allowing women to feel loved.   Quite deep and thought-provoking insights that inspired me to both book a hair appointment AND go for a therapeutic run in the country air!
